How Adam got started This is a brief profile of my fishing experience and my love for the sport. I am originally from Dubuque, IA. My dad started taking me fishing at the age of five, he would take me fishing at a small farm pond for bass and bluegills. I loved it right from the start. As I got older, I would fish almost every night after school on a little creek near my house for smallmouth bass. When I was older, I started fishing the Mississippi River for walleyes. In 1999 I moved to Madison, Wisconsin and began fishing the Madison chain of lakes. I fished almost every night after work and full days on the weekends, which helped me to learn a lot in a very short time. I began reading every fishing article that I could get my hands on. I became very successful at catching bass, pike, walleyes and panfish under almost any conditions. The summer of 1999 my father and I were on a fishing trip in Ontario, Canada. This is where it all began. We were catching a bunch of nice northern pike throwing bass style spinnerbaits around weed edges when the biggest fish I had ever seen followed my spinnerbait to the boat. It was a huge musky! I began throwing every big lure in my box at this fish. It followed in three different lures before it sank off never to be seen again. Since then, I have become obsessed with catching this elusive fish. I purchased a bunch of musky gear and upgraded my equipment to handle these giant fish. Madison has a great musky population and this was a perfect place to learn all about these mysterious fish. I began catching muskies on all sorts of different baits. The more I caught, the more equipment I needed to buy. During a visit to a musky expo, I learned about an organization called Muskies Inc. and joined the Capital City chapter, which is based in Madison. I began reading everything I could about muskies and I spent countless hours on the water to quickly gain experience. Over Labor Day weekend of 2001, my friend Travis Clark and I went on a musky fishing trip to Vilas County WI. One morning while fishing a rock point a large fish smashed my lure. I knew the fish was large as it was ripping drag on my heavy musky equipment. After about a 15 minute battle, we saw the fish for the first time. It was a HUGE musky that had a head like an alligator! My knees were knocking and my heart had a burning sensation from the adrenaline rush. I prayed that we would get the fish into the net. After a few more long runs, the fish was in the net! It took both of us to lift the fish into the boat. The musky measured an amazing 55” long! We took some video footage and released the fish to be caught another day. To the best of my knowledge, this fish was the longest musky caught in Wisconsin that year. A replica of this fish hangs on my wall today to remind me of the excitement of that day. After catching that huge fish, my passion for muskies grew. In 2002, I began competing in musky tournaments. They have taken me all over the Midwest from New York to Minnesota. I have learned a lot from fishing tournaments and they have made me a better fisherman by forcing me to better deal with pressured fish under some very tough conditions. |
